My First of Many

Greetings fellow EDH (Yes...I'm aware that wizards has dubbed the format Commander, but for the sake of efficiency I will refer to it as EDH) players.  This is to be my first of many posts on Going Commander, a blog where I will share whatever thoughts I may have on the format.  My gratitude to my brother, the Commanding Commander (Jim Cole), for creating the blog Going Commander.

I would like to start out by sharing with you a bit about my magic background and then finish by describing what the EDH format is to me, and why I find it so enjoyable.

It was 1999...I was amidst the Poke'mon craze, my first TCG "Gotta Catch 'Em All".  Somewhere down the line my brother introduced me to MTG.  We began slinging cards (MTG) at our local type 0 tournaments in Galena, IL.  Keep in mind that these tournaments were fairly casual and people would bring whatever deck they could brew up for the week.  My first brew was a B/W Pestilence deck.  This deck was jammed full of "Pro Black" creatures and Urza's Armors (We've all done it...).  I piloted this ship to a fair number of wins at the type 0 tournaments.  After awhile people stopped showing up to the tournaments and my interest in MTG dwindled.

It was 2006/2007...I rekindled my flame for MTG.  It was around this time that I started to get competitive with MTG.  I started drafting at the local card store, Comic World in Dubuque, IA.  I then proceeded to share my addiction for "cardboard crack" with many of my friends.  We started running box drafts of T/P/F out of my basement.  Who knew MTG could be so contagious.

It was 2009...I built my first EDH deck, Sedris the Traitor King (Decklists to come once I find an efficient way to post them).  I've been brewing ever since...

Decks in order of completion:  Sedris the Traitor King (UBR), Norin the Wary (R), Wort Boggart Auntie (BR), Reaper King #1 (WUBRG), Vorosh the Hunter (UBG), Geist of Saint Traft (WU), Reaper King #2 (WBRG), and Damia Sage of Stone (UBG).

EDH is currently my favorite MTG format.  It is excellent to gather with friends and play one of the most variable formats MTG has to offer.  I consider myself a competent deck builder and EDH is the perfect format for me to get my fill of deck building.  I currently reside in Chicago, IL, and keep a small Standard/EDH collection with me.  I will occasionally make a trip home to Galena, IL, to visit my family and dig through my much larger stock of Magic cards.  This is where I do my best work with thousands of EDH quality commons, uncommons, rares, and mythic rares at my fingertips.  I must say that Wort Boggart Auntie, Reaper King #1, Reaper King #2, and Geist of Saint Traft were all brewed from the comfort of my bedroom closet on weekends home visiting the family.  My brother has been a big help with testing many of my latest creations, and for that I must thank him.

So...I must ask you to be patient as I'm looking into the most efficient way to post decklists.  As time allows, I will post my decklists along with an analysis of my card decisions for each deck.  Looking forward to seeing you at the kitchen table.

Signing off,
Commander C.C.C.
